"Sets You Apart" Essay

For as long as I can remember, I have always been considered to be "weird". Until recently, I thought that this was a horrible thing, secluding myself from others during most of my middle school years. In the past few years, I have met others that have also been considered weird, which has assisted me in embracing my weirdness. No longer do I hinder myself from what I truly enjoy, but instead, I am now more eager than ever to discover what other talents are hidden behind my weirdness. Early on, this weirdness existed because I wasn't like the other students, reading, drawing, and playing with LEGOs or blocks in my free time instead of playing with toys or watching television. Now, the weirdness has evolved to a mysterious persona that most people can't seem to figure out.

Perhaps my career interests and my background are responsible for this mysteriousness. I have always been interested in math and science, but just recently I have solidifed my career goals to engineering. It's not just the interests alone that catches one's attention, it's my background. Often, when I mention that I aspire to be a Mechanical Engineer, most people exclaim, "but wait, you're a girl!" I'm pretty sure race also comes to mind, but it wouldn't be politcally correct to mention. Pushing the stereotypical limits in a male-dominated field is definitely a challenge, but I'm in for it! Although I will inevitably encounter negative stereoptypes, I am able to look past that and recognize myself as a distinguished individual.
