SigmaC@T 108 FIRST Robotics Team
Years Participated: 2005 - Present
Positions Held: Team Leader/President, Project Manager
Details: FIRST, For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, is an organization founded by inventor Dean Kamen to spread science and technology through robotics competitions.
I am currently the team leader of FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 108, SigmaC@T. Our team is sponsored by Motorola and is composed of students from Dillard and Taravella High Schools. I chose to enroll at Dillard High because of the robotics program featured as a path in the Emerging Computer Technology magnet.
My involvement with robotics is far too extensive to sum in a few short paragraphs, so I have created a dedicated page, Robotics.
National Technical Honor Society (NTHS)
Years Participated: 2006 - Present
Positions Held: President, Vice President, Secretary
Details: I joined National Technical Honor Society during my sophomore year of high school with no idea what was head of me. At the time, all I knew was that I liked technology and that this organization apparently had something to do with it. I have since been further enlightened about the organization that promotes excellence in technology education.
At our school, not only did NTHS recognize technological excellence, but the organization also engaged in several projects a year to introduce more students to technology and technology-related careers. In the last two years, our main project has been a computer resoration projects, where we collect donated computers, repair and refurbish them, and provide them to students without computers at our school along with technical support if necessary. The project is still being continued. Other projects for this year include application development for mobile devices.
SECME
Years Participated: 2001-2002, 2006 - Present
Positions Held: Vice President, Secretary
Details: Though the organization no longer represents an acronym, SECME is an organization promoting STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) education in K-12 schools. The organization hosts local and national engineering, math, and science olympiads.
I initially participated in the SECME Brain Bowl competition in elementary school. Our team placed 1st in Brain Bowl and 2nd Overall, with several high placings in the mouse trap car, banner, and water bottle rocket.
I joined SECME at the high school level, participating in many levels of the competition including: brain bowl, balsa wood bridge, water bottle rocket, mouse trap car, and themed essay. In my sophomore year, I wrote the themed essay for the topic "SECME: A New Generation of Explorers", which recieved 2nd place at the county level. That year our team also placed for the mouse trap car and poster.
